Since first logging onto my first Apple (IBM hadn't yet discovered personal computing) I have gone through 30 years of repeatedly encountering technology that promises a lot--and requires a certain amount of patience because it doesn't quite do what it seemed like it could do.

Here we have a taste of the future, but it isn't here yet. Those who love the game will be patient, and I can see the excitement that an avatar can now raise its eyebrows along with its creator. But so long as it's at this level I don't think that effectively connecting with a person online will be enhanced very much by the visual tricks. I think that connection is about tracking and responding to the person, whether or not it can be seen, and visual distractions may actually get in the way.
