Think Before You Speak - Fitting Room

Almost 90% of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students report being verbally harassed at school because of their sexual orientation. LGBT teens experience homophobic remarks and harassment throughout the school day, creating an atmosphere where they feel disrespected, unwanted and unsafe. Homophobic remarks such as thats so gay are the most commonly heard; these slurs are often unintentional and a common part of teens vernacular. Most do not recognize the consequences, but the casual use of this language often carries over into more overt harassment.

This campaign aims to raise awareness about the prevalence and consequences of anti-LGBT bias and behavior in Americas schools. Ultimately, the goal is to reduce and prevent the use of homophobic language in an effort to create a more positive environment for LGBT teens. The campaign also aims to reach adults, including school personnel and parents; their support of this message is crucial to the success of efforts to change behavior.

How Do People Respond to Being Touched by a Robot?

How might people react if they were touched by a robot? Would they recoil, or would they take it in stride? In an initial study, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology found people generally had a positive response toward being touched by a robotic nurse, but that their perception of the robot's intent made a significant difference.

Charlie Kemp, assistant professor in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University, and Tiffany Chen, doctoral student at Tech, talk about their investigation that looks at how being attended by a robot can affect people's comfort level.

The research took place in Kemp's Healthcare Robotics Lab with the robot known as Cody. Cody is now sporting new Xbox 360 Kinect headgear, gear that he didn't have in the initial study.

Shorewood Lip Dub

Love to watch talented kids!

A lip dub is a type of video that combines lip synching and audio dubbing to make a music video. It is made by filming individuals or a group of people lip synching while listening to a song or any recorded audio then dubbing over it in post editing with the original audio of the song. There is often some form of mobile audio device used such as an MP3 players. Often they look like simple music videos, although many involve a lot of preparation and production. Lip dubs can be done in a single unedited shot that often travels through different rooms and situations within a building. They have become popular with the advent of mass participatory video content sites like YouTube.

Peer Helping in Action

This video focuses on "Peer Helping in Action." It tells the story about collaboration between St. Charles, Missouri, Public High Schools, St. Charles High School and St. Charles West High School Peer Helping classes and Missouri Department of Transportation for a Peer Helping retreat called "Youth Saving Youth."

The foundation for the retreat is the NAPPP curriculum "Zero Tolerance for Underage Drinking and Driving- Youth Saving Youth." Research has shown that peer education is an effective way to influence choices young people make about drinking and driving and seat belt compliance.
In this video Peer Helper 2 students who have written lessons are shown delivering these lessons to Peer Helper 1 students. These students, in turn, will deliver these lessons back at their high schools for their peers. Some of the lessons developed by the students are Distracted Driving, Seat Belt Safety, Drowsy Driving, Anti-Drug Bingo, and Decisions, Decision, Decisions. This program is highly interactive, allowing students to discuss their opinions about Zero Tolerance laws and about underage drinking and driving.
Peer Helper 2 students present the curriculum "Hard Questions" and "What Now Questions." Dr. Judith Tindall and the School Resource Officer (SRO) enforce the basic information around underage drinking and driving, distracted driving, and seat belt safety.

Some of the partners in the video are parent volunteers, donations from the local IGA, SRO's, prosecuting attorney, Think First Foundation of Missouri, two high school peer programs, NAPPP and others.

If you are interested in the evaluation from 2009-2010 project, please contact NAPPP at nappp@peerprogramprofessionals.org. The outcome data indicated positive trends for youth safety.
